Yes, our intention was to tie up to a free dock in Rome, however there wasn't a safe wall or marina to be found. The walls are decrepit and could not find the floating dock that was mentioned. Yet another example of how you can't rely on some of the "looping" guidebooks. We have learned today that it is important to always have an alternate plan! We continued on and eventually tied up to the free wall prior to lock 21. After an hour or so of being there, with the wind kicking up, we decided to move onto Sylvan Beach. We made it ~6p.m. and were able to get one of the last spots on their free wall. Nice safe place to stay and the first "tourist" spot we have encountered during this trip, complete with a waterfront beach and amusement park. We plan on staying for a few nights as we have no need for water or electricity and, of course, rain and wind are forecasted for tomorrow.
This town is a blast from the past! Reminds me of Old Orchard Beach having an amusement park, complete with small roller coaster, arcade, games, rides and skeeball. The town boasts the oldest carousel dating back to 1896. This weekend was "pirates weekend" a tradition the locals have as an excuse to party.
While here in Sylvan Beach we encountered several boats that have house generators they leave chained to the docks to run their a/c and electronics. Something new to see every day on this trip.
