Days 62 - 75 Benson, AZ Saguaro National Park, Tombstone, Bisbee, etc.
Hi all!! Sorry for the delay! I have been sidelined with spider bite? Feeling better now all is good.
Finally made it to Arizona! Found camping nearby in Benson at Benson RV estates, only a few miles from Tombstone, Bisbee and Saguaro National Park-Sonoran Desert. This was our first park having all amenities, including pool and hot tub, since leaving Florida. We had planned to stay for 3-4 days here but the weather was so cold up north that we stayed for almost two weeks.
Of course we knew Tombstone would be a tourist trap, but we were so close we had to check it out. It felt like strolling around an old western movie set with the feel of some of the Disney parks we have visited with our boys when they were younger. Boothill was pretty interesting seeing the graves of those who were killed in a gunfight with Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday. If you haven't seen it check out the movie Tombstone. Although I don't usually like the shoot 'em up kind of movies, I did enjoy this one. Here is a link to where you can find the movie. I'm thinking you may have a subscription to at least one of these.
Bisbee was a neat old town, kind of quirky, artsy and historic. It reminded me of some of the small European towns having narrow cobblestone streets and colorful houses built into the side of a mountain. It was an old mining town and you can still take a tour into the Copper Queen mines . We opted for a few hours on a golf court tour of the town. While here we also visited Lowell, a true ghost town which is now pretty much a museum complete with 50's cars and storefronts.
We also spent our time here exploring and taking a few hikes on the east and west side of the Saguaro. Our first hike was with one of the national park rangers to see some of the biggest saguaro cacti found in the park and learn about the plants and wildlife found here. It was interesting to learn that it takes approximately 75-100 years for them to produce one arm! Can you even imagine?
Most memorable experience after seeing the large cacti was eating a Sonoran hot dog at a 5 star roadside truck. (see picture of the menu below).
