Days 94-96 Bryce Canyon, Back to Flagstaff and preparing to head home.
Bryce Canyon 3/26

We headed back to Flagstaff, about an 8 hour drive, so we stopped at Bryce Canyon to break up the ride. We stayed at Ruby's Inn, a hotel right outside of the park, on the way back to do a little exploring. After a short hike in the park we drove the length of the park to plan our day here tomorrow. Bryce is a different kind of beautiful, having thousands of hoodoos formed by erosion. I had never heard this word before, but I have also only recently experienced the desert. Our hike down into the canyon the next day was probably one of the most beautiful hikes we enjoyed on this trip. It was pretty amazing looking up at these enormous spires. Being at over 9,000 feet we understand what hiking at this altitude means and limited our hikes to a few miles so as to avoid altitude sickness.

We arrived at the campground in Flagstaff in the late afternoon and began on readying the camper, and ourselves, for the 5+ days of driving and staying at harvest hosts on our way to visit our friends Scott and Starlet in Morehead, KY. This will be a time to visit, rest and recuperate from our travels across the country before we make the last several day trip toward home. This meant lots of cleaning, filling the water tanks, laundry and stocking the fridge as well as my visit to a dentist and the hand clinic for one final check on my healing before heading out.

As we begin to look back on our travels there are a few things that stand out. Something Dan has heard me say several times on this trip "it's a whole lot of beautiful, and a whole lot of nothing". In most parts of the country we have traveled through, from South Western Texas through Southern New Mexico and Arizona one can drive for miles without seeing another vehicle, or even a house. Quite odd compared to driving in New England. Trains are also enormous out here! I counted 124 double decker cars and 4 freight locomotives hauling the train in the picture below.
