Days 24-32 Fort Pickens- Pensacola, FL
We spent about a week here visiting my college friend, beaching it and spending some time planning our trip west. Fort Pickens is located in the Gulf Islands National Seashore. Built between 1829-1834 to protect Pensacola Bay, at one time it imprisoned Geronimo and was in use defending the coastline until 1947 when the post was closed.
Today the national seashore is the longest stretch of federally protected seashore in the U.S. Plenty to do here including hiking, kayaking, biking, fishing, visiting the forts or simply hanging out on the beach hunting down the best looking seashells. We stayed here in the national park, camping just steps from the ocean.
